PAN card correction online: fee, documents and steps to change name, date of birth, address or gender

Quick answer

Apply on the Protean (or UTIITSL) website using "Changes or Correction in existing PAN Data / Reprint of PAN Card". Tick the box next to each detail you want to change and attach proof. The fee is ₹107 with a physical card (₹101 fully paperless with Aadhaar e-KYC + e-Sign) or ₹72 for e-PAN only (₹66 paperless); e-Sign adds ₹5.90. Processing normally takes about two weeks. Your PAN number stays the same. From 1 April 2026, Aadhaar is not accepted as proof of date of birth for PAN, so keep another DOB proof ready. Only the address can be updated through Protean's separate Aadhaar e-KYC service without the full form, and gender changes need no proof.

A wrong spelling, an old surname, a wrong date of birth or an outdated address on your PAN causes problems. PAN–Aadhaar linking fails, bank KYC gets stuck and ITR details don't match. Correcting PAN is done online, costs about ₹100, and does not change your PAN number.

PAN correction fees at a glance

Protean's official fees, for an Indian communication address, including GST:

How you applyPhysical PAN card + e-PANe-PAN only (no card)
Online, fully paperless (Aadhaar e-KYC & e-Sign, or scanned docs with e-Sign/DSC)₹101 (+ ₹5.90 e-Sign)₹66 (+ ₹5.90 e-Sign)
Online, documents sent by post₹107₹72
At a PAN centre / TIN facilitation centre₹107₹72

Do you need a physical card at all? An e-PAN (PDF) is valid proof of PAN. Choosing e-PAN only saves about ₹35. You need an email ID, because the e-PAN is sent there.

What you can correct, and what proof you need

Detail to correctProof needed
Name (spelling, surname after marriage, full name instead of initials)A valid document showing the correct name, plus identity proof
Date of birthA date-of-birth proof in the correct date. Aadhaar is not accepted as DOB proof from 1 April 2026
Father's nameA document supporting the change
GenderNo proof needed (Protean FAQ)
AddressAddress proof in your own name. Address alone can be updated through Protean's Aadhaar e-KYC service
Every applicationProof of your current PAN (copy of PAN card or allotment letter) + proof of identity + address + date of birth

Documents Protean accepts as proof of identity, address and date of birth (any one, in your name):

  • Aadhaar card (identity and address only, not DOB from 1 April 2026)
  • Voter ID (Elector's photo identity card)
  • Driving licence
  • Passport
  • Ration card with your photograph
  • Identity certificate signed by an MP, MLA, municipal councillor or gazetted officer (original)
  • Bank certificate on the branch letterhead, with your attested photo and account number (original)

Name as per Aadhaar is printed on the PAN card. If your Aadhaar name has initials, Protean asks you to type the full expanded name in the name fields, then enter the name exactly as in Aadhaar in the "Name as per Aadhaar" field. If your Aadhaar itself is wrong, fix it first. See update name in Aadhaar.

Steps: PAN correction online on Protean

  1. Open Protean's online PAN application (onlineservices.proteantech.in). Choose "Changes or Correction in existing PAN Data / Reprint of PAN Card" and category Individual.
  2. Enter your name, date of birth, email and mobile. Save the token number you get; it lets you resume later.
  3. Fill all the columns of the form. Tick the box in the left margin only against the details you want to change.
  4. Choose how to submit: paperless (Aadhaar e-KYC + e-Sign, cheapest) or by sending documents by post.
  5. Choose physical card + e-PAN or e-PAN only, then pay online (₹101 / ₹66 paperless, ₹107 / ₹72 otherwise).
  6. Save the acknowledgement number. Track it with "Know your Status" on Protean. Processing normally takes about two weeks.

You can also apply through UTIITSL, the other PAN service agency. The form and documents are the same; the fee is shown there when you pay.

Correct PAN or Aadhaar? Decide first

You have two PAN cardsKeep one and surrender the other using the same form. Holding more than one PAN can attract a ₹10,000 penalty

Apply only on the official Protean or UTIITSL websites, or the Income Tax e-filing portal. Agents and look-alike sites charge extra and collect your Aadhaar and OTP. Protean publicly warns applicants about spurious calls. See how to spot real government websites.

Frequently asked questions

What is the fee for PAN card correction online?

₹107 (with physical card) or ₹72 (e-PAN only) for an Indian address. If you apply fully paperless with Aadhaar e-KYC and e-Sign, it is ₹101 or ₹66, plus ₹5.90 e-Sign charges.

How long does PAN correction take?

Protean says it normally takes about two weeks to process the application and dispatch the card, if the application is in order.

Will my PAN number change after correction?

No. The correction updates details on the same PAN; you get a new card with the same number.

Can I use Aadhaar as date of birth proof for PAN correction?

No, not from 1 April 2026. Aadhaar is still accepted as proof of identity and address, but not for date of birth.

Do I need proof to change gender in PAN?

No. Protean's FAQ says documentary proof is not needed for a change in the gender field.

How do I change only my address in PAN?

Protean lets you update just the address through its Aadhaar-based e-KYC service. For other changes, use the full correction form.

What if I only want a new PAN card without any change?

Use the separate reprint link: ₹50 for an Indian address. It works if your latest PAN application was processed through Protean or the e-filing portal.
