Is this a real government website? 5 quick checks before you enter any details

Quick answer

Real Indian government websites almost always end in .gov.in or .nic.in (for example uidai.gov.in, incometax.gov.in, ladakibahin.maharashtra.gov.in). A few official services run on partner domains that the government itself links to (such as Protean and UTIITSL for PAN, or npci.org.in). Before entering details, check the exact domain, open it by typing it yourself or via india.gov.in, and never pay a “fee” by UPI to a site you reached from a message.

5 quick checks

  1. Read the domain carefully. The part just before “.gov.in” matters: uidai.gov.in is real; an address like uidai.gov.in.something-else.com is fake (the real owner there is something-else.com).
  2. Don’t click links from SMS/WhatsApp. Type the address yourself, or find it from india.gov.in / maharashtra.gov.in.
  3. Check what it asks for. Real portals never ask for your ATM PIN, UPI PIN or card CVV, and never ask for bank details to “update Aadhaar”.
  4. Check the fee. Official fees are fixed and paid on the official payment page. A site asking for a “processing fee” by personal UPI is a scam.
  5. Cross-check the scheme. If you’ve never heard of the scheme, search the name with “PIB Fact Check” — many “new schemes” are fake.
