How to change or correct your name in Aadhaar (after marriage, spelling mistakes and more)

Quick answer

A name change or correction in Aadhaar cannot be done online — you must visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or enrolment centre with an original proof of identity (POI) showing the new name. The fee is ₹75. You can update your name only twice in your lifetime; after that, UIDAI’s exception process through the regional office applies. After marriage, carry a marriage certificate; for a completely new name, a gazette notification plus an old ID in your old name.

Correction or change — which one is yours?

Both are done the same way, at a centre, and both count towards your two-time limit. But the documents you need are different.

  • Correction — the name is yours, but Aadhaar has it wrong. “Sunita Patil” is printed as “Suneeta Patil”, the surname is missing, or only initials were entered years ago. You need one valid ID that shows your name correctly.
  • Change — you now use a different name. Most often this is after marriage (new surname), or a legal name change published in the gazette.

Example: Sunita Patil got married and moved from Nashik to Pune. She now wants “Sunita Deshmukh” on Aadhaar, and also the Pune address. She can do both in one visit — one request, one ₹75 fee. (The address alone could be changed online — see address update.)

You get only two name updates in your lifetime. So get the spelling exactly right the first time — the same as on your PAN, bank account and passport. A mismatch with PAN can later block PAN–Aadhaar linking.

Documents that work

Carry the original. PAN card is not on UIDAI’s list of accepted documents, so don’t rely on it. The centre scans it and gives it back. It must show your new name and your photo. Commonly accepted proof of identity:

  • Passport
  • Voter ID
  • Driving licence
  • Government or PSU photo ID / service ID card, or pensioner photo ID
  • Ration card with photo
  • School or college marksheet / certificate with photo
  • Marriage certificate issued by the government

After marriage: a government marriage certificate showing your new name. If it doesn’t have a photo, also carry another photo ID.

Completely new name: the gazette notification of the name change (State or Central) plus an old ID with your old name and photo, so the centre can connect the two.

Step by step

  1. Book an appointment on uidai.gov.in (Book an Appointment) for an Aadhaar Seva Kendra, or walk in to a nearby enrolment centre (banks and post offices run many).
  2. Carry your Aadhaar and the original document in your new name.
  3. At the counter, tell the operator the name exactly as you want it. Check the English spelling and the local-language spelling (Marathi in Maharashtra) on the screen before you confirm — Aadhaar prints both.
  4. Give your fingerprint or iris to confirm it’s you, and pay ₹75. Ask for a receipt.
  5. Collect the acknowledgement slip with the URN (Update Request Number). Keep it safe.
  6. Track the status on myAadhaar → Check Enrolment & Update Status using the URN. Once updated, download the new e-Aadhaar free on myAadhaar.

How long does it take? Usually a few days to a few weeks. If the status stays “in progress” for long, call 1947 with your URN.

Why name updates get rejected

  • The document is not on UIDAI’s list, is unclear, or is a photocopy without the original
  • The name you asked for doesn’t match the name on the document
  • The marriage certificate or gazette doesn’t clearly link your old and new names
  • You have already used both of your lifetime name updates

If rejected, read the reason on the status page, fix that one thing, and apply again. Used both updates already? Call 1947 or ask at the centre for the exception process — the request goes to the UIDAI regional office (Mumbai for Maharashtra), which decides.

Scam alert: SMS or WhatsApp links saying “Update your Aadhaar name now or it will be cancelled” are fake. UIDAI never asks for your OTP on a call, and name changes can’t be done through any link at all — only at a centre. Never share your Aadhaar OTP with anyone.

Frequently asked questions

No. Name changes and corrections need a visit to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or enrolment centre with an original proof of identity in the new name.

How many times can I change my name in Aadhaar?

Twice in a lifetime. After that, only through UIDAI’s exception process at the regional office.

What documents do I need to change my surname after marriage?

A government-issued marriage certificate showing the new name, plus a photo ID if the certificate has no photo.
