PAN and Aadhaar name or date-of-birth mismatch: which one to correct, and how

Quick answer

Linking fails when the name, date of birth or gender on PAN and Aadhaar don’t match. Correct whichever document is wrong — PAN through Protean or UTIITSL, or Aadhaar through myAadhaar/an Aadhaar centre. From 1 April 2026, new PANs use the name as in Aadhaar, so matching PAN to Aadhaar is usually simplest. If linking still fails, use biometric authentication at a Protean or UTIITSL PAN centre.

New PAN name ruleFrom 1 Apr 2026, PAN name as per AadhaarPAN rules 2026 (reported)

Step 1 — Find exactly what does not match

Put your PAN card and Aadhaar side by side and compare:

FieldTypical problemUsually fixed in
NameInitials vs full name, surname after marriage, spellingPAN (to match Aadhaar)
Date of birthOnly year of birth in old Aadhaar, typing errorsWhichever is wrong (Aadhaar DOB can change only once)
GenderData-entry errorWhichever is wrong

Small differences often pass. The Income Tax portal accepts partial name matches with Aadhaar OTP in many cases (e.g. “R. Kumar” vs “Ravi Kumar”). Try linking first — correct documents only if it fails.

Step 2 — Correct PAN (most common)

  1. Go to Protean (onlineservices.proteantech.in) or UTIITSL (pan.utiitsl.com) — whichever issued your PAN, though either can process changes.
  2. Choose “Changes or correction in existing PAN data / Reprint of PAN card”.
  3. Tick the field to change (name / DOB / gender) and enter details exactly as in Aadhaar.
  4. Use Aadhaar-based e-KYC and e-Sign for a paperless application, pay the fee shown, and submit.
  5. The updated PAN data usually reflects in a couple of weeks. Then link again.

Step 3 — Or correct Aadhaar

If Aadhaar is the one that is wrong, update it on myAadhaar (for supported fields) or at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra with a valid document. Remember the lifetime limits: name twice, date of birth once, gender once — beyond that, a UIDAI regional office exception is needed. See Aadhaar DOB correction.

Step 4 — If it still fails: biometric authentication

If both look correct but linking still fails, visit a dedicated PAN centre of Protean or UTIITSL with your PAN, Aadhaar and the ₹1,000 fee challan. They verify you with your fingerprint (Aadhaar biometric) and link the records after collecting a small service charge.

Frequently asked questions

My name on PAN and Aadhaar is different. How do I link them?

First try linking with Aadhaar OTP — small differences are often accepted. If it fails, correct your PAN (or Aadhaar) so that name, date of birth and gender match, then link again.

Which should I correct, PAN or Aadhaar?

Correct whichever is wrong. If both are right but formatted differently, it is usually easier to update PAN to match Aadhaar, especially as PAN names now follow Aadhaar.

Do I pay the ₹1,000 fee again after correction?

No. The fee paid for your PAN stays valid; you only need to submit the link request again.

What is biometric authentication for PAN–Aadhaar linking?

A facility at dedicated Protean and UTIITSL PAN centres where your identity is verified with Aadhaar fingerprint authentication to resolve mismatches. A service charge applies.
