The new Aadhaar app (2026): what it does, how to set it up, and what replaced mAadhaar

Quick answer

UIDAI launched the new Aadhaar app on 28 January 2026; it is replacing mAadhaar. It lets you show and share only the details needed (for example just your name or age) through QR codes, verify yourself with face authentication, lock/unlock biometrics, and update email (free till 31 Dec 2026) and, in eligible cases, mobile number and address. Download it only from the official app stores (publisher: UIDAI).

How to set it up

  1. Install “Aadhaar” from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Check the publisher is Unique Identification Authority of India.
  2. Open the app, enter your Aadhaar number, and verify with the OTP sent to your Aadhaar mobile.
  3. Complete face authentication when asked, and set an app PIN.
  4. Your profile loads. You can now share, verify, lock biometrics or request updates.

Switching from mAadhaar? Just install the new app and register. You can uninstall mAadhaar afterwards. Your Aadhaar number and details do not change.

Beware of look-alike apps. The official app is free and published by UIDAI. No app or website needs your Aadhaar OTP “to keep your Aadhaar active”.
