PF claim rejected or stuck? Find the reason and the fix in 4 questions
Most PF claims are rejected for one of five reasons: bank account problems, name/date of birth not matching Aadhaar, date of exit not marked, the claim breaks a withdrawal rule (service period, minimum balance, waiting period), or an old PF account not linked/transferred. Check the remark in Claim Status on the EPFO member portal, fix that one thing, and file a fresh claim. Since 2025 you don't need to upload a cheque or passbook image, and bank seeding no longer needs employer approval. Claims should be settled within 20 days; if not, complain free on EPFiGMS.

Why was my PF claim rejected?

Fix your bank details, then file again
EPFO pays only to a bank account seeded with your UAN whose holder name matches your PF record.
- Log in to the EPFO member portal → Manage → KYC → Bank. Enter the account number and IFSC of an active account in your own name.
- Authenticate with Aadhaar OTP. Since April 2025 the employer does not have to approve it; the bank/NPCI verifies it.
- Wait until the bank shows as verified in KYC, then file a fresh claim.
- You don't need to upload a cheque leaf or passbook image any more; old rejections for "unclear cheque" don't apply now.

Correct your name or date of birth to match Aadhaar
Claims fail when your PF details don't match Aadhaar (and your bank).
- If your UAN is Aadhaar-verified, you can correct name, date of birth, gender and parents' names yourself on the member portal; most corrections need no employer or EPFO approval.
- If the portal asks for employer approval, request it from your employer's HR (joint declaration).
- Once the correction is approved, file a fresh claim.
Step-by-step: PF name and DOB correction.
Get your date of exit recorded
A final settlement needs the date you left the job to be in EPFO's records.
- Check your service history on the member portal to see if the exit date is there.
- If it's missing, follow the steps in PF exit date correction, or ask the old employer's HR to update it.
- If the employer has closed or doesn't respond, raise a complaint on EPFiGMS (free).
- After the exit date shows, file the claim again.
Check that your claim fits the withdrawal rules
Many rejections are simply a claim filed under the wrong reason, or too early.
- Partial withdrawal (advance) needs at least 12 months of service, and 25% of your contributions must stay in the account as minimum balance (rules approved by EPFO's board, 13 Oct 2025).
- Final settlement after losing a job has a waiting period, which was changed to 12 months (pension withdrawal: 36 months).
- Pick the reason that really fits and the right form (Form 31 for advance, Form 19 for final PF, Form 10C for pension).

Claim pending too long? Escalate it free
- EPFO's Citizen's Charter says a claim should be settled within 20 days. Advance claims up to ₹5 lakh are often auto-settled in about 3 days.
- Check Track Claim Status. If it's with the employer, remind HR to approve.
- Past 20 days? Raise a grievance on EPFiGMS (epfigms.gov.in) or call 1800-118-005. Note the claim ID.
- Don't pay any "agent" to speed it up; EPFO services are free.
Old PF missing or transfer pending
- If an old member ID is not linked to your UAN, link it or file an online transfer claim. For Aadhaar-verified UANs, employer attestation is mostly not needed (only about 10% of transfer claims still need it).
- If an employer wrongly linked someone else's member ID to your UAN, use the online de-linking facility.
- Withdraw only after the transfer is complete, so the full balance and service count.
Steps: PF transfer online.
Remark unclear? Ask EPFO directly
- Raise a grievance on EPFiGMS (epfigms.gov.in) and paste the exact rejection remark; ask what to correct.
- Or call the toll-free helpline 1800-118-005.
- Make sure your UAN is activated, Aadhaar is verified and bank is seeded in KYC; most problems trace back to one of these.
Before you file again: 4-point check
- UAN activated and Aadhaar verified in KYC
- Bank account seeded and shown as verified (active, in your own name)
- Name and date of birth in PF match Aadhaar
- For final settlement: date of exit shows in service history, and old accounts are transferred
Never pay an agent or share your OTP. EPFO warns that cyber cafes and "fintech" agents charge for services that are free, and with your OTP or UAN password a fraudster can change your bank account. Claims, transfers, KYC and complaints are all free on the EPFO portal and UMANG app.
Frequently asked questions
Why was my PF claim rejected?
The usual reasons are bank account problems, name or date of birth not matching Aadhaar, the date of exit not being recorded, a claim that doesn't meet the withdrawal rules (service, minimum balance or waiting period), or an old PF account not transferred. The remark in Claim Status tells you which.
What should I do after my PF claim is rejected?
Fix the specific problem in the remark (bank, KYC, exit date or eligibility) and file a fresh claim. A rejection does not stop you from applying again.
Do I still need to upload a cancelled cheque for a PF claim?
No. EPFO has removed the requirement of uploading a cheque leaf or attested passbook image for online claims, for all members.
Does my employer need to approve my bank account change in PF?
No. Since 2025 the employer's approval is not needed after bank verification; you authenticate the change with Aadhaar OTP.
How long does EPFO take to settle a claim, and where do I complain?
EPFO's Citizen's Charter gives 20 days. If it takes longer, raise a free grievance on EPFiGMS (epfigms.gov.in) or call 1800-118-005.
