How to check your PF balance: missed call, SMS, UMANG and EPFO passbook
The quickest way to check your PF balance is a missed call to 9966044425 or an SMS "EPFOHO UAN" to 7738299899 from the mobile number registered with your UAN. Your UAN must be activated and at least one KYC (bank account, Aadhaar or PAN) must be linked. For full details month by month, open the EPFO passbook at passbook.epfindia.gov.in or in the UMANG app. All of these are free.

Your PF (Provident Fund) money sits with EPFO, not with your company. You can see it yourself, for free, in five official ways. Which one works for you depends on two things: is your UAN activated, and is your mobile number registered with it.
Don't know your UAN yet? First read how to find your PF number and UAN.
The 5 official ways, compared
| Way | What you do | What you need | What you see |
|---|---|---|---|
| Missed call | Call 9966044425; it cuts on its own | Activated UAN, registered mobile, 1 KYC seeded | SMS with last contribution and balance |
| SMS | Send EPFOHO UAN to 7738299899 | Same as missed call | SMS with last contribution and balance |
| UMANG app | EPFO → View Passbook → UAN + OTP | Activated UAN, registered mobile | Full passbook, each month |
| EPFO passbook portal | passbook.epfindia.gov.in → UAN + password | Activated UAN, password | Full passbook for every PF account (Member ID) |
| EPFO member portal | unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in → login | Activated UAN, password | Service history, KYC status, link to passbook |
The missed call and SMS are the easiest for parents or anyone without a smartphone. The passbook is the best when you want to check every month's entry.
Type the SMS exactly as EPFOHO UAN — the word "UAN" itself, not your 12-digit number. EPFO picks your details from the mobile number you send it from. Want the reply in Marathi? Send EPFOHO UAN MAR (Hindi: EPFOHO UAN HIN).
Before you start: the 3 things that must be in place
- Your UAN is activated — if not, see UAN activation with face authentication.
- Your mobile number is registered against the UAN, and you use that same number.
- At least one of bank account, Aadhaar or PAN is seeded (linked and approved) with the UAN.
If the missed call gives no reply, one of these three is usually missing.
Check your balance step by step (passbook)
- Open passbook.epfindia.gov.in (or UMANG → EPFO → View Passbook).
- Enter your UAN, password and the captcha. In UMANG, you get an OTP instead.
- Choose the Member ID (PF account) you want. Every job has its own Member ID.
- Open the passbook for the year you want. You can download it as a PDF.
How to read your PF passbook
The passbook has three money columns. Here is what they mean in simple words.
| Column | What it is | Can you withdraw it as PF? |
|---|---|---|
| Employee share | Your 12% cut from salary every month | Yes (as per withdrawal rules) |
| Employer share | The part of your employer's 12% that goes to your PF | Yes (as per withdrawal rules) |
| Pension contribution (EPS) | Part of employer's share that goes to the pension fund | No — this becomes pension, or a separate pension withdrawal |
Example: Sunita works in Nashik with basic + DA of ₹30,000. Every month her passbook shows ₹3,600 as employee share. Her employer's ₹3,600 is split: ₹2,083 goes to the pension (EPS) column and ₹1,517 to the employer share column. So her PF grows by ₹5,117 a month, and the ₹2,083 builds her pension. (Before the wage ceiling rose to ₹25,000 on 17 September 2026, the split was ₹1,250 + ₹2,350, so older passbook entries look different.) Try your own numbers in the EPF calculator.
Interest is shown as a separate line, usually once a year for the whole year. EPF interest for 2025-26 is 8.25%. If you do not see the interest line yet, EPFO has not posted it to your account; it is not lost.
Why your balance may look wrong
| What you see | Usual reason | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| This month's contribution missing | Employer has not deposited or filed yet | Wait till the next month; if months are missing, ask HR for the payment proof |
| Old job's balance not in new account | Old PF not transferred | File a transfer claim on the member portal |
| No interest for last year | Interest not yet posted to your account | Check again later; interest is added for the full year |
| Passbook not available at all | Your company runs its own PF trust (exempted) | Ask your employer for the PF statement |
| Two accounts, two UANs | New UAN made by a new employer | See what to do with 2 UANs |
| Missed call: no SMS back | Mobile not registered, or no KYC seeded | Log in to member portal and fix KYC |
Can you check PF balance without UAN?
For accounts managed by EPFO, all the official ways above need your UAN (or your UAN-registered mobile). There is no official way to see the balance with just your name or PF number. So first find your UAN — it is printed on most salary slips, or HR can give it.
If your company has its own PF trust (an "exempted establishment"), the trust or HR gives you the statement.
Checking PF balance is always free. Do not share your UAN password or any OTP with anyone who calls you "from EPFO" or offers to "check your PF". EPFO does not ask for your OTP on a phone call. Never pay an agent for this.
When you are ready to take money out, read how to withdraw PF online.
Frequently asked questions
Is the PF balance missed call free?
Yes. The call cuts automatically and you get an SMS with your last contribution and PF balance. It works only from the mobile number registered with your activated UAN.
I sent the SMS but got no reply. Why?
Usually your mobile is not registered with the UAN, the UAN is not activated, or no KYC (bank, Aadhaar or PAN) is seeded. Log in to the EPFO member portal and check your KYC.
Can I get the PF balance SMS in Marathi?
Yes. EPFO's SMS service replies in English by default and also offers Marathi, Hindi and 8 other languages. The language code to add is listed on EPFO's SMS service page.
Why is the pension (EPS) amount shown separately?
That part of your employer's contribution goes into the pension fund. It is not part of your PF balance that you withdraw normally; it gives you pension, or a separate pension withdrawal if you leave early.
My passbook shows no interest for last year. Did I lose it?
No. Interest is added once a year after EPFO posts it to accounts. Check again later.
