Add or remove a name in your ration card in Maharashtra: documents, online steps and time limit
In Maharashtra you can add, remove or correct a name, or change the address, on a ration card online at rcms.mahafood.gov.in or at your rationing / tahsil supply office. There is no fee. For a child under 16 you need Aadhaar plus a birth certificate, school leaving certificate or bonafide certificate. For a member aged 16+, you need Aadhaar plus PAN, driving licence or voter ID. A newly married woman also needs the certificate showing her name was removed from her parents' ration card. Under the Right to Public Services Act, adding a name takes 3 working days (30 days if a home visit is needed). Removing or correcting a name takes 3 working days, and an address change 30 days.

A new baby, a daughter-in-law after marriage, a relative who moved in, or a family member who died: your ration card has to match your real household. Only people listed on it get grain under the National Food Security Act. In Maharashtra these changes are free and have legal time limits under the Right to Public Services Act.

Married woman? Remove the name from the parents' card first. A person can be on only one ration card. Ask the parents' rationing office to remove her name and give the removal certificate. Then add her to the in-laws' card with that certificate.
Steps: online on RCMS
- Open rcms.mahafood.gov.in (the department's Ration Card Management System) and use Sign In / Register.
- Choose the service: add a name, remove a name, correct a name or change address.
- Enter your ration card number and the member's details exactly as in Aadhaar.
- Upload the documents from the table above. For a child under 16, the birth certificate is usually the simplest.
- Submit and note the application number. There is no fee; don't pay anyone who asks.
- Track it with "Know your ration card status" on the department website. If the time limit passes without a decision, file an appeal (see below).
Prefer to go in person? Take the same documents to your Rationing Office (Mumbai–Thane rationing area) or the Tahsil / Food Distribution Office (rest of Maharashtra).

Not done in time? Appeal
Under the Maharashtra Right to Public Services Act, 2015, if a notified service isn't given in time, or is refused without a proper reason, you can file a first appeal. For ration card changes the appellate officer is the Assistant Controller of Rationing / Food Distribution Officer / District Supply Officer. After that you can file a second appeal, and finally a third appeal to the State Right to Service Commission. The officer at fault can be fined up to ₹5,000 per case.
After the name is added: do e-KYC
Every member listed on a ration card must complete Aadhaar e-KYC, so do it for the new member too. It's free, at the ration shop or with the Mera eKYC app. See ration card e-KYC.
Which ration card type do you have?
Adding a member doesn't change your card type by itself. For reference, the Citizen Charter describes the main categories:
| Card / group | Who (summary) | Grain |
|---|---|---|
| Antyodaya (AAY) | Poorest households: for example widow-, sick-, disabled- or 60+-headed families without support, primitive tribal families, landless labourers | 35 kg per card per month |
| Priority household (PHH) | Annual family income up to ₹59,000 (urban) / ₹44,000 (rural) | 5 kg per person per month |
| Saffron (APL) not in PHH / white card | Saffron: annual family income above ₹15,000 and up to ₹1 lakh; white card: above that | No NFSA grain (APL farmers in notified districts get grain under a state scheme) |
Under the central notification, NFSA grain is free from 1 January 2024 to 31 December 2028. e-Ration cards are free for AAY and PHH cardholders (GR dated 16 May 2023).
