Someone took a loan on your PAN? How to check, dispute and report it

Quick answer

If a loan or credit card you didn’t take appears in your name, (1) get your credit report (you can get one free full report a year from each credit bureau), (2) dispute the entry with the bureau and write to the lender that it is fraud, (3) file a complaint on cybercrime.gov.in (or call 1930) and a police FIR, and (4) if the lender doesn’t resolve it within 30 days, complain to the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in.

Steps to fix a fraudulent loan

  1. Download your credit report from the bureau’s official website. Note the lender name, account number and date of the unknown loan.
  2. Raise a dispute with the credit bureau online, marking the account as “not mine / fraud”.
  3. Write to the lender (email to their grievance officer) saying you never applied, attach your ID and ask them to close the account and correct the bureau report. Keep the complaint number.
  4. File a cyber complaint on cybercrime.gov.in (or call 1930) and a police FIR. Send copies to the lender.
  5. If the lender doesn’t resolve it within 30 days, file a complaint with the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in.

Prevent it happening again

  • Don’t share PAN/Aadhaar photos on WhatsApp, social media or unknown loan apps.
  • Write the purpose and date on any ID copy you give.
  • Use masked Aadhaar where possible — see masked Aadhaar.
  • Check your credit report every few months (use the free annual report from each bureau in turn).
