Sunil drives a delivery bike in Nashik. Someone at the chowk said, "Make an e-Shram card, the government puts ₹1,000 a month in it." That is not how it works. e-Shram is a free national register of unorganised workers. It gives you an ID and a single place to join welfare schemes you qualify for. It is worth doing, but for the right reasons.

Are you eligible?

  • Age 16 or above
  • You work in the unorganised sector: home-based, self-employed, or a wage worker in a unit not covered by EPFO/ESIC (farm labour, construction, domestic work, street vending, gig and platform work, etc.)
  • You are not an income-tax payer
  • You are not a member of EPFO or ESIC (no PF deduction or ESI card from an employer)

There is no income limit and no need to be poor or have a ration card.

The e-Shram card does not pay a fixed monthly amount. Messages promising "₹1,000 / ₹3,000 a month on e-Shram card, click to check" are fake. The insurance schemes need their own enrolment and yearly premium from your bank account. See fake scheme messages.

How to register, step by step

  1. Open register.eshram.gov.in (self-registration) from the official eshram.gov.in site.
  2. Enter your Aadhaar-linked mobile number and verify it with the OTP.
  3. Enter your Aadhaar number and complete Aadhaar e-KYC with OTP. Your name, photo and date of birth come from Aadhaar.
  4. Fill in address, education, occupation and skills. Choose the occupation closest to your work.
  5. Add your bank account details (use an account that is Aadhaar-seeded so any benefit can reach you; see Aadhaar seeded vs linked).
  6. Submit. Download the e-Shram card with your UAN.

No smartphone or mobile not linked to Aadhaar? Go to the nearest Common Service Centre (CSC) or State Seva Kendra. They do biometric e-KYC. Registration is free there too: the government says workers need not pay any fee to any agency.

After registering

  • Keep it updated: log in with your UAN and update mobile, address, occupation or bank details when they change.
  • Join schemes: in the One-Stop Solution, check "Find Eligible Schemes" and apply for those that fit.
  • Got a job with PF/ESI later? You become part of the organised sector. EPFO/ESIC members are not eligible for e-Shram.
