TDS deducted but not showing in Form 26AS or AIS? Why it happens and how to get it fixed

Quick answer

TDS shows in Form 26AS and AIS only after the person who deducted it (your employer, bank or tenant) files their quarterly TDS return correctly. If it is missing, the usual reasons are: the return is not filed yet, it has your PAN wrong, it uses the wrong year, or (from April 2026) the old section number. Only the deductor can fix this, by filing a correction (revised) TDS return, so ask them in writing. In your ITR you can claim only the TDS that shows in Form 26AS. TDS deducted from April 2026 onwards appears in the new Form 168 for Tax Year 2026-27.

Sunita works for a private company in Nashik. Her salary slip says ₹3,000 TDS was cut every month from April. But when she opens her tax statement in October, the amount is short. Did her employer keep the money? Usually not. In most cases the employer has not yet filed, or has made a mistake in, the quarterly TDS return. This guide shows how to find out which, and how to get it fixed.

First, look in the right place

Since 1 April 2026 the new Income-tax Act applies, so there are two separate statements this year:

TDS deducted duringShows inUsed for
April 2025 – March 2026 (FY 2025-26)AIS for AY 2026-27, and Form 26ASYour ITR for AY 2026-27 (old Act)
April 2026 onwards (Tax Year 2026-27)Form No. 168 (the new annual information statement)Your return for Tax Year 2026-27 (new Act)

So if TDS cut in May 2026 is "missing" from your AY 2026-27 AIS, it is in the wrong statement, not lost. See Tax Year explained.

How to open AIS: log in at incometax.gov.in → Annual Information Statement (AIS) on the dashboard (or e-File → Income Tax Returns → View AIS) → Proceed. Form 26AS is on the TRACES portal, which you also reach after logging in to the e-filing site.

Why TDS doesn't show, and the fix for each

ReasonWhat you noticeFix
1. Deductor has not filed the quarterly TDS return yetTDS is on your salary slip or Form 16A, but the whole quarter is missingTDS returns are filed every quarter. Ask the deductor whether the return for that quarter has been filed. Credit appears only after it is filed
2. Wrong PAN in the deductor's returnNothing at all under your PAN from that deductorGive the deductor your correct PAN in writing. They must file a correction statement
3. Wrong year (AY/TY) picked on the challan or returnTDS shows under a different year, or not at allThe deductor files a correction. The Income Tax Department lists this as a common mistake during the change to the new Act
4. Old section number used for a payment after 1 April 2026 (e.g. salary TDS under old section 192 instead of new section 392)Processing errors, credit missing or mismatchedThe deductor files a correction statement with the new section. Rates did not change, only the section numbers
5. Amount wrong in the returnTDS shows, but less than on your slipAsk the deductor to file a revised TDS return for that quarter

Late deposit doesn't cancel your credit. If tax was deducted in March 2026 but deposited after 1 April 2026, you still get credit in AY 2026-27, as long as the deductor files the Q4 (January–March 2026) return correctly.

What you can do yourself

  1. Collect proof: salary slips, Form 16 / 16A, or the bank's interest certificate showing TDS, the period and your PAN.
  2. Compare month by month (or quarter by quarter) with AIS / Form 168 and Form 26AS. Note exactly which quarter and amount is missing.
  3. Write to the deductor (HR / payroll, the bank branch, or your tenant): give your PAN, the amount, the quarter, and ask them to file a correction / revised TDS return. Keep their reply.
  4. Give AIS feedback if an entry in AIS is wrong: click the entry → Optional in the Feedback column → choose the option → Submit. You get an acknowledgement, plus an email and SMS.
  5. Check again after the deductor says the correction is filed. Corrections take some time to show.

Don't claim more TDS than Form 26AS shows. The Income Tax Department limits the TDS credit in your ITR to the amount in Form 26AS. If you claim more, your refund will be lower or you may get a demand. Get the deductor to fix it first.

Already filed your return?

If your return was processed with less TDS credit, the Department's tax credit mismatch FAQ says: if you have not received the intimation yet, you can file a revised return. If you have received it, use the Rectification service on the portal once the corrected TDS shows. If your refund is stuck, also see Income tax refund not received.

Frequently asked questions

Why is TDS deducted from my salary not showing in Form 26AS?

Usually your employer has not yet filed the quarterly TDS return, or filed it with a wrong PAN, wrong year or wrong section. Ask the employer to file a correction (revised) TDS return. Only they can fix it.

TDS deducted in 2026-27 is not in my AIS. Why?

TDS deducted from April 2026 belongs to Tax Year 2026-27 and shows in the new Form No. 168, not in the AIS for AY 2026-27.

Can I claim TDS that is not showing in Form 26AS?

The credit you get in your ITR is limited to what Form 26AS shows, so get the deductor to correct their TDS return first.

Does AIS feedback fix the missing TDS?

Feedback records your correction against the entry in AIS. For a TDS mismatch, the Department says the deductor still needs to file a revised TDS return.

How long can my employer take to correct an old TDS return?

For periods under the old Act, a correction can be filed within two years from the end of the tax year in which the original statement was due.
